Side event “Application of the Espoo Convention to nuclear energy-related activities”

A side event during the Meeting of the Parties (MOP) on application of the Espoo Convention to nuclear energy-related activities was organized on the 3rd of June by Ecoclub (Ukraine) together with European ECO Forum and CEE Bankwatch Network.

The main goal of the side event was to share and discuss practical experience of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and governments in the application of the Espoo Convention provisions to nuclear energy-related activities.

During the event Oksana Maiboroda from Ecoclub presented the brochure “Application of the Espoo Convention to nuclear energy-related activities: current practice and recommendations for a unified approach” and drew attention of the participants to the findings regarding the case on the Rivne NPP lifetime extension that was under consideration during intersession period of the Espoo Convention Implementation Committee and endorsed by the MOP.

Jan Haverkamp from Greenpeace summarized good practices of the Espoo Convention application in Europe. Johannes Kresbach from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management shared experience of Austria as an affected Party in applying the Espoo Convention to nuclear energy projects. Seija Rantakallio from the Ministry of the Environment shared experience of Finland as a Party of origin in applying the Espoo Convention to nuclear energy projects.

Participants of the side-event discussed with panellists highlighted issues and expressed own views.
