Bohuslav сommunity reduces electricity costs with solar energy
31.01.2025
In the Bohuslav community, Kyiv region, a grid-connected solar power plant (SPP) has been installed with a capacity of 73.08 kW. The plant will reduce electricity costs for wastewater treatment and pumping, ensuring the stable operation of the treatment facilities.
The SPP was installed as part of the Renewable Energy for a Sustainable Ukraine project, implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German government. The NGO Ecoclub team provided project support. The total cost of the project is nearly €55,300.
To ensure high-quality water treatment, powerful pumps transport wastewater 9 kilometers from the city, consuming a significant amount of electricity. As a result, wastewater disposal tariffs in the community are among the highest in the region.
“We face high electricity costs for wastewater pumping. Thanks to the operation of the SPP, we expect to save approximately 15%. According to preliminary calculations, the plant will generate over 79,000 kWh per year. This will allow the water utility to save around 770,000 UAH annually at this year’s tariff,” said Pavlo Pavlichenko, Head of the Economy and Revenue Department of the Bohuslav City Community.
The community had planned to install the SPP even before the full-scale invasion as part of its development strategy aimed at improving the region’s environmental security. The use of renewable energy sources will not only reduce community expenses but also lower greenhouse gas emissions.
“This is the second SPP in our community. The first one was installed for the water intake facility, and we realized that this work needs to continue. We gained experience and were able to justify and communicate the benefits of the station to our residents. Now, promoting and implementing such projects is much easier. We have already planned the next one — the installation of an SPP for the community hospital. We also want to equip all municipal facilities with solar power stations because we see the results and the benefits they bring,” shared Pavlo Pavlichenko.
The community is already increasing the capacity of the SPP at the water treatment facility by an additional 25 kW, which will allow for greater savings—funds that can be allocated to other energy efficiency measures.
The Renewable Energy for a Sustainable Ukraine project is implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German government.
