A solar power plant (SPP) with a capacity of 30.4 kW has been installed on the roof of the outpatient clinic in Teofipol. The system is paired with batteries that store excess generated electricity, ensuring that patients can receive treatment and undergo examinations even during power outages.
This solar installation will enhance the quality of healthcare services provided by the two largest medical institutions in the community, serving a population of 22,000 people.
“During prolonged power outages, all institutions rely on generators. However, the high cost of fuel prevents us from maintaining the continuous operation of critical infrastructure. We primarily use generators for heating systems during the winter season. The installation of the solar plant is a crucial step towards greater energy independence for the hospital,” said Yuliya Semeniuk, Deputy Head of Teofipol Township.
The SPP was installed as part of the “Renewable Energy for a Resilient Ukraine” project, implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German government. The total cost of the project amounts to nearly 2.5 million hryvnias.
“Our outpatient clinic is equipped with hematology and urine analyzers, oxygen concentrators. On the same grounds as the clinic is the Teofipol Multidisciplinary Hospital, which has dialysis machines, a CT scanner, as well as radiology and ultrasound equipment. All of this requires a stable power supply,” emphasizes Iryna Yakovleva, Chief Physician of the Teofipol Primary Health Care Center.
During power outages, the clinic operated on diesel generators. However, according to the Chief Physician, they cannot fully support the medical facility’s operations. The solar power plant will reduce electricity costs from the main grid, saving approximately 228,000 UAH annually. The saved funds will be used to improve healthcare services.
Several solar power plants are already operational in the Teofipol community, with a total capacity of 3.1 MW. The community plans to increase renewable energy generation to 10 MW, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and enhancing the energy security of critical infrastructure.
“The Town Council, together with TeploEnergoKomplex and KhmelnytskOblEnergo, is working on the ‘Energy Island of Teofipol Territorial Community’ project, which will ensure uninterrupted power supply during blackouts,” said Yuliya Semeniuk.
As part of the “Renewable Energy for a Resilient Ukraine” project, a consortium of civil society organizations (Ecoclub, Ecoaction, ENERGY ACT FOR UKRAINE Foundation, and RePower Ukraine Charitable Foundation) is collaborating with 16 communities that have received grants for implementing renewable energy projects, such as the installation of solar power plants.
Project “Renewables for sustainable Ukraine” is implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German government.
