The Renewable Energy for a Sustainable Ukraine (R2U) project is an initiative of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, carried out on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK) and with the support of International Climate Initiative.

The project was implemented by a consortium of civil society organizations. – Екоклуб (leader), Екодія, Energy Act For Ukraine Foundation, RePower Ukraine Charitable Foundation. Project partners – Міністерство енергетики and Міністерство розвитку громад та територій України.

R2U contributed to strengthening the energy independence of communities, increasing their resilience in wartime conditions, and creating the conditions for sustainable development.

Key results:

  • 19 solar power plants
  • 1 heat pump
  • 1.07 MW – solar power plant capacity
  • 346 kWh – battery capacity
  • 50 kW – heat pump capacity
  • 580 tons of СО2 – annual reduction in greenhouse gas emissions
  • 850 000 Ukrainians wall benefit
  • 100+ media mentions

Project goal

One of the key objectives of the project was to support civil society in the energy transition process, which will help reduce environmental impact and adapt to climate change. The project was implemented by a consortium of civil society organizations. (Ecoclub, Ecoaction, Energy Act Foundation, RePower Charitable Foundation).

R2U included the following key stages: selection of municipalities wishing to receive renewable energy installations, preparation of project documentation, engagement of contractors for construction, and quality control at all stages. An advocacy campaign was also conducted to create a favorable environment for RES in communities.

Kostyantyn Dzhalalyan
Director of KP Slavutych Vodokanal

Thanks to solar power, we will be able to work continuously, even if there is no electricity, and our city will have water. That means 100% of the population, 24 public institutions, and 201 organizations will benefit.
